Automotive Design Studios Visualize Auto Racing In The Year 2025

24th October 2008 2:00 pm mitsubishi

Today’s race cars have ground-breaking technology to improve speed, power, performance and safety but what a difference 17 years into the future can make. Imagine race cars that go beyond the expectations and challenges of racing today, such as never needing to stop for re-fueling or collision avoidance assistance technology for enhanced safety.

Nine of Southern California’s automotive design studios did just that, predicting how auto racing will change by the year 2025. The designs are part of the fifth annual Los Angeles Auto Show’s Design Challenge, where studios including Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Volkswagen are pitted against each other to showcase their talents and further explore new ideas in automotive design.

“Automotive designers have always been fascinated with Motor Sports and this year’s Design Challenge has provided them with the opportunity to use their creative talent to look at these cars with new eyes, using innovative technologies and approaches,” said Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy, Inc. “This adds to the excitement, interest and personal involvement in the sport that has thrilled people of all ages for many years…and many more years to come.”

Entries in this year’s Motor Sports 2025 Design Challenge include:

• Audi of America Design Center California: The Audi R25 incorporates innovative features such as high-velocity banks and tunnels, which allow cars to race “inverted” and the opportunity to pass anywhere with aerodynamic racecars.

• BMW Group DesignworksUSA: The BMW Hydrogen Powered Salt Flat Racer reuses existing, ordinary and mundane materials such as old oil barrels and BBQ lids to whimsical and sustainable by employing goldfish as “co-pilots” to ensure that the vehicle is running clean emissions.

• General Motors Advanced Design: The GM Chaparral Volt collects and generates its own energy from three different clean, renewable and abundant California resources: Earth, Wind and Fire to create an entirely new category of racing - the eco-triathlon.

• Honda Research and Development, North America: The Great Race 2025’s sonar/echolocation sensors are able to detect changes in speed, terrain, and altitude, allowing it to switch to any configuration to circumnavigate the globe in 24 hours on land through the U.S., by sea through Asia and by air over Europe.

• Mazda R&D of North America: The MAZDA KAAN is an electric race car that has a patented electronic tire system to reach 250 mph with no harmful emissions. The vehicles are piloted by individual drivers but teams are made up of thirty cars, all on the track together.

• Mitsubishi Research & Design of North America: The MMR25’s multi-terrain, omnidirectional wheels consist of eight independently-controlled motors, allowing for “8 x 4” wheel drive so that the car can be driven forward while pointing in any direction.

• Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design of North America: Luxury racing arrives in the Formula Zero Racer by incorporating the thrill of Formula One, the track dynamics of the bobsled or luge, and the grace and efficiency of yacht racing.

• Toyota’s Calty Design Research: The Toyota Le Mans Racer is the ultimate race car that never needs to stop. Powered by highly efficient hydrogen fuel cell electric motors, each of its body panels is embedded with photovoltaic panels to supply electricity when extra energy is needed.

• Volkswagen of America Design Center: In the Bio Runner, the rider is positioned inside a protective cage on a motorcycle-like saddle with controls attached to the hands and feet. These controls manipulate all wheels via synthetic muscle-based suspension which offers unparalleled control and traction.

Entries will be judged by Tom Matano of San Francisco’s Academy of Art University, Imre Molner of Detroit’s College for Creative Studies and Stewart Reed of Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design. Daniel Simon, an established car designer and founder of Cosmic Motors, is the special guest judge this year. Simon began his design career at Volkswagen and recently published his first book: Cosmic Motors-Spaceships, Cars and Pilots of Another Galaxy.

The winning design will be announced at the Design Los Angeles conference Nov. 20 at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

About the Design Challenge

Entering its fifth year, Design Los Angeles provides designers with leading design speakers and the opportunity to address common issues. More than 500 designers attended last year’s event.

Racing Lancer Prepares To Make Its Debut

22nd August 2008 3:08 pm mitsubishi

Team Repsol mmspsubishi Ralliart driver and 9-times Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel takes the driver’s seat.  Team Repsol mmspsubishi Ralliart has a busy time ahead.

As well as competing in selected rounds of the inaugural Dakar Series; the FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup and the FIA International Cup for Cross-Country Bajas with the tried and tested Pajero/Montero Evolution - it is also developing the new ‘’Racing Lancer’’ with the clear objective of winning the 2009 Dakar.

The Racing Lancer, mmspsubishi’s latest cross-country rally car, is powered by a new turbocharged diesel engine which has already been put through its paces in a specific version of the Pajero/Montero Evolution on the following races:  the Central Europe Rally (the first event of the recently-established Dakar Series), the Rali Transiberico (second round of FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup), and the Baja Espana (third round of the FIA International Cup for Cross-Country Bajas).

Competing at rally speeds against leading teams has enabled Team Repsol to gather invaluable data which is not obtainable through testing alone.

Hiroshi Masuoka (Japan) has competed twice with the turbocharged Pajero/Montero Evolution and is enthusiastic about the newcomer’s potential: “The diesel version is overwhelmingly easy to drive thanks to its tremendous torque which is available over an even broader rev-band. It outperforms the petrol-powered car in terms of controllability over challenging terrain, as well as when accelerating out of corners and along high-speed straights. With the right set-up it would be comfortably faster.”

Joan ‘Nani’ Roma (Spain) drove a Pajero/Montero Evolution with the new turbo-diesel grafted into it on the Rali Transiberico, adapting his driving style to the new engine’s torque characteristics. Roma succeeded in posting three fastest stage times on the Portuguese event, leading at one point, which proves the potential of the new engine.

This experimental car covered more than 8,000km in testing and competition, allowing engineers to develop new suspension geometry designed to cope with the different weight distribution and torque characteristics.

A new engine compartment layout has also been developed, ensuring better cooling for the engine and auxiliary components. Technical improvements to the turbocharger have produced improved response at low revs, as well as more power at high engine speeds, and reliability has also been enhanced.

In preparation of the 2009 Dakar, Team Repsol has entered three petrol versions of the Pajero/Montero Evolution for Portugal’s PAX Rally: the second event of the recently-established Dakar Series (9-14 September). Stéphane Peterhansel (France), Luc Alphand (France) and Joan “Nani” Roma (Spain) will be in the drivers’ seats, developing the suspension and tyres which will be carried over to the Racing Lancer.

The Racing Lancer itself is due to undergo testing in Morocco, covering 8,000km. Following its extensive development program, the Racing Lancer makes its official debut in round six of the 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup (Portugal, 30 October-2 November). The car will be in the hands of Stéphane Peterhansel, the Dakar’s most successful competitor with a total of nine outright wins.

Mitsubishi Racing Team Regroups For Ulster

20th August 2008 12:03 am mitsubishi

The Mitsubishi Motors UK works Rally Team heads to this weekend’s Todds Lead Ulster International Rally, round four of the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship, with a two-car team comprising Guy Wilks/David Moynihan and Gwyndaf Evans/Paul Nagle.

Following a difficult few weeks since the Rally Isle of Man in July - and the subsequent change of line up after Phillip Morrow and his co-driver Daniel Barritt were released from their contracts - the Mitsubishi team are heading to Ulster hoping that recent issues can be put aside and a good weekend’s sport will prevail.

“The most important task for us this year is to retain its British Team’s title for Mitsubishi Motors and, to do this, we now need to finish first and third on average for the rest of the season”, said Ralliart General Manager and Team Principal Paul Brigden.

“However, rallying is a sport rather than a science - as we have seen recently - so nothing is guaranteed, but I believe we have a good possibility of achieving our target.”

Having driven for the team in 2007, Gwyndaf Evans has been invited back for the remainder of the season and the experienced Welshman is looking forward to the task ahead.

With a first and a second place under his belt from the first three rounds, 2007 British Champion Wilks currently lies fourth in the driver’s standings and will be out to get the defence of his title back on track on the Ulster asphalt.

Wilks’ regular co-driver Phil Pugh is still out of action due to a recurring back problem, which means that Irishman David Moynihan continues alongside the Brit. Evans will also be partnered by an Irishman on this event, the highly-experienced Paul Nagle accompanying the Welshman for the first time.

The rally, which is based in Armagh, starts on Friday evening and features six timed special stages before the overnight halt, followed by a further ten on Saturday, the total of which provides a competitive distance 134 miles.

The team’s two Lancer Evolution IXs are built by Chesterfield-based ADR Motorsport, who also provides the on-event technical support.

The team is sponsored by Lovell Group and Virgin Money, together with its technical partners: HKS, Sparco, Speedline Corse, PIAA, Ricardo, and Performance Friction Brakes.

Mitsubishi to Conduct Research on Electric Vehicles

8th August 2008 11:02 am mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced today that it has signed a letter of intent with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) covering the use of MMC’s zero-emissions i MiEV electric vehicle for research and demonstration purposes.

According to Tohru Hashimoto, Corporate General Manager of the i MiEV Business Promotion Office of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, “We are hoping for the opportunity to introduce the small, four-passenger Mitsubishi i MiEV to PG&E’s fleet in the fourth quarter of this year so that we can begin real-world U.S. testing. The joint partnership will yield valuable data and a greater appreciation of the practicality of an all-electric vehicle in California.”

Extensive testing with the i MiEV has taken place over the past two years with seven major utility companies in Japan. The success of these programs quickened the pace and prompted Mitsubishi Motors to begin selling the electric vehicle in the Japan market in summer of 2009.

Through daily use, PG&E will gauge the viability of utilizing all-electric vehicles in its operations and further understand the impact of charging electric vehicles on the electric grid. The testing will provide PG&E and Mitsubishi Motors with vehicle usage data, which will be used to publicly demonstrate and validate the many benefits of dedicated electric vehicles within the California market.

“PG&E has been researching the benefits of electric vehicles since the nineties. Partnering with automakers like Mitsubishi is vital to developing compatible infrastructures to support electric vehicles in the marketplace and ensure responsible integration with the grid,” said Andrew Tang, senior director of smart energy web for PG&E. “By working with Mitsubishi, we will
both benefit from a free exchange of electric vehicle information that includes charging infrastructure availability, vehicle data, vehicle commercialization expectations and public feedback.”

The i MiEV electric vehicle, which is based on Mitsubishi’s “i” gasoline-powered mini car on sale in Japan, adapts a zero-emissions state-of-the-art electric drivetrain. A durable 330-volt lithium-ion battery system is located under the floor deck and powers a permanent magnet electric motor. With this packaging, the vehicle offers the same level of interior utility and space as the gasoline version while lowering the center of gravity for more stable handling. The 47 kW electric motor offers improved performance and quicker acceleration over the 64-hp gasoline version.

The advanced lithium-ion battery is developed by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation / Mitsubishi Corporation / GS Yuasa joint venture company, Lithium Energy Japan. LEJ represents the leading edge in battery technology and promises up to 100 miles* of zero emissions, economical driving on a single charge when packaged in the i MiEV.
